The rise & fall of different wedding trends

The National Wedding Survey is carried out annually by Hitched.co.uk, one of the UK's largest wedding planning sites. They asked over 2,400 couples who got married in 2022 all about their wedding. 

Every couple is different but are you interested in the rise and fall of certain wedding traditions?

Firstly, here are some wedding trends that are not necessarily surprising

  • 90% of couples lived together before their wedding

  • 89% will have alcohol at their wedding

  • 86% will have a wedding "first dance"

  • 79% will cut the wedding cake as part of their day

  • 78% will have a "wedding party" to accompany the couple at the ceremony (e.g. bridesmaids & groomsmen etc)

  • 61% incorporated something old, new, borrowed & blue


Declining wedding trends include

  • 79% where one person will change their name

  • 68% gave wedding favours to guests

  • 43% asked parental permission or blessing to get married

  • 32% hire a videographer

  • 27% hired a wedding car

  • 18% had a wedding gift list

  • 12% had a wedding bouquet toss

  • 12% changed into a different outfit during the day


Growing and emerging wedding trends include

  • 36% created a wedding website to keep guests informed

  • 28% hired a photo booth

  • 19% included eco-friendly or sustainable decorations or wedding elements

  • 12% of brides wore a colour other than white/ivory

  • 11% of couples had a "first look" of each other before the wedding ceremony began

  • 4% hired a dog chaperone for their “fur-baby”
