What is a Eulogy?
A funeral can be whatever the next of kin or family want. Normally however, it usually involves some sort of eulogy or telling the life story of the person who has died. This can be tricky if the next of kin is not personally close to the deceased, but for a spouse, son or daughter it can be a useful part of the grieving process.
Yes, it can take time & may at times be upsetting but a focus on happy memories & a person’s lasting impact on others can bring some closure & comfort.
I will always check my eulogies with the family to ensure accuracy & tone. It amazes me how many celebrants or ministers talk about a person they don’t know simply from unchecked notes they’ve made whilst meeting the bereaved family. I have in the past listened to a eulogy and not recognised the person being described. I always work with families until they are happy with the eulogy. Sometimes this might mean making minor changes, sometimes more or less. The most important thing for me is accuracy & satisfaction. I always give a commemorative copy of the eulogy to the next of kin. It complements the order of service as a keepsake of the funeral & the life that has ended.
